[Essence Flux] vs. [Lightning Bolt]

Asked by Wyrbak 7 years ago

I have a creature and my opponent Lightning Bolt's it. If I use Essence Flux, when does my creature comeback into play? And does it get hit with the Lightning Bolt?

I believe the way it works is that your creature comes back into play immediately, but not as the same creature that Bolt was targeting. So Bolt resolves with no target and your creature lives.

When you Essence Flux the creature returns to the battlefield immediately. It is a different game object than the one targeted by Lightning Bolt. When Lightning Bolt checks targets upon resolution it will see that it has no legal targets and will be countered by the rules of the game.

This is different than resolving with no target as GearNoir said would happen because some targeted spells have other effects too. For example Aftershock will be countered if its target is no longer legal and it will not do damage to you.
