Eldrazi Temple - Mana Question

Asked by ZaLiTHkA 13 years ago

So, I had a bit of confusion the other day while trying out a new card.. The part that got me was this:Add 2 to your mana pool. Spend this mana only to cast colorless Eldrazi spells or activate abilities of colorless Eldrazi.

As I understand it, it's possible to prevent a creature being summoned by means of an instant with 'Counter Target Spell' when the creature is being summoned (that's how to PC version works).

If this is correct, to me it makes sense that summoning a colourless Eldrazi creature could be considered a 'colourless eldrazi spell', therefore I should be able to use 2 mana from Eldrazi Temple to pay for the summon cost of a colourless Eldrazi creature.

If not, then I imagine it can only be used for the abilities of colourless Eldrazi already in play, instants or sorceries.

Or... Have I completely lost the plot here?

To "summon" a creature is to cast it as a spell from your hand. "Summon" hasn't been a part of the game's vocabulary since before the 6th Edition rules overhaul, and you can see by the nature of your question that one of the reasons for removing it was to reduce confusion in the game.

When you cast a creature, it's a spell, and then becomes a permanent after the spell resolves. While it's still a spell, any effect that cares about spells can interact with it (unless it specifically says "noncreature spell", like Negate or Blood Funnel , etc.). You're allowed to use the special mana from Eldrazi Temple to pay for the cost of Eldrazi creature spells.

Spells are anything that use the stack and are cast, i.e. anything not a land. You may use Eldrazi Temple to cast Eldrazi creatures (Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre ), Eldrazi sorceries (Skittering Invasion ), Eldrazi enchantments (Eldrazi Conscription ) or Eldrazi artifacts (not that there are any, but if an artifact were to gain the subtype Eldrazi, then you could use it for that)

Can a colorless eldrazi with a coverted mana cost that contains a color (like sludge crawler or dominator drone) be cast using eldrazi temple tap for 2 mana ability?

The mana produced by Eldrazi Temple is can be used to pay for generic or colorless symbols in the cost of Devoid spells, because Devoid makes them colorless. You can use it to pay for the generic in Dominator Drone's cost (but not the colored ).

FYI, if you have a question it's much better to post a new topic than add another response to a very old one. Only users who have already posted in the old topic and are still subscribed to it will be able to notice that you posted in it. This particular topic is over 4 years old, which is enough time for the rules of the game to have changed significantly! (in this case, the relevant rules have stayed the same)
