EDH and activated abilities of creatures

Asked by LeafyNixon 9 years ago

Let's say I'm playing a Lazav, Dimir Mastermind EDH, and Lazav becomes a Ghost-Lit Raider . Is there any way I can activate his new ability, even though it's outside my color identity (Say if I was Using Pili-Pala )?

Nope. You'll never have any red mana to activate it.

Since Lazav becomes a copy of the card, and a copy includes Mana symbols are costs, wouldn't his commander's colour identity change as well?

Ahh, nevermind. From mtgcommander.net

  1. A card's colour identity is its colour plus the colour of any mana symbols in the card's rules text. A card's colour identity is established before the game begins, and cannot be changed by game effects. The Commander's colour identity restricts what cards may appear in the deck. Details

SHRA. My bad.

Technically, there is a way you can activate the ability. You would need to have something like Sunglasses of Urza or Mycosynth Lattice , which allows you to spend mana as though it were mana of the appropriate color, but never actually tries to add mana of that color to your mana pool (and therefore never violates the EDH mana restrictions).

The others are still correct in saying you can never add mana of a color not within your general's color identity to your mana pool.
