Dread Slaver vs Vorapede
Asked by everyonesproblm 13 years ago
I pondered something interesting. I run a Dread Slaver in my deck, and while I havent use it yet, if I were to face a large creature like vorapede I would attack with SLaver and then doom blade vorapede to bring it to my side. my question is how does this effect resolve when undying is involved. does it come back on my side or theirs and does it get a +1/+1 counter?
Humm, correct me if I'm wrong Epoc, but I don't think that in either scenarios, Vorapede would come back on everyonesproblm side.
As I understand the question, you attack with Dread Slaver and it's blocked by Vorapede . Dread Slaver will die in a combat vs Vorapede and be sent to the graveyard.
And you can cast spells or abilities only after combat damage step. So if you Doom Blade Vorapede after damage has been dealt, Dread Slaver isn't on the field anymore, so its ability won't trigger.
Maybe its just my understanding that is wrong, but I don't think you can bring Vorapede by your side using this method. Dread Slaver has to survive for its ability to trigger

I think you are both right, and it will only work as Epoc describes if there is some way to make the slaver survive the combat damage step but still have it damage Vorapede (like Terrifying Presence ).

I believe he would be casting Doom Blade before blockers to prevent Vorapede from being declared as a blocker (since it would be illogical to attack with Dread Slaver otherwise).
Players may cast spells and activate abilities during declare attackers and declare blockers, not just after combat damage.

That I know, but for the ability to trigger, D. Slaver must have done damage to Vorapede(example). If he cast Doom Blade before blocker steps, only the Undying ability from Vorapede will trigger.

Dread Slaver 's ability requires the opposing creature to take damage, though. So in order for the return from graveyard trigger to work, the Doom Blade would come after combat damage is dealt, and something else would have to be used to keep the slaver alive. Or you could skip the Doom Blade and just use Necrobite , as it kind of does everything at once.
Bah, if only Enslave were legal.

or, you know, you could give your slaver Lightning Prowess or something...

So it does; I hadn't remembered that part about the damage requirement.
In this case, unless you are able to keep Dread Slaver alive (first strike, regen) or get it to die at the same time as Vorapede (deathtouch, buffs), Dread Slaver will die and won't be on the field at the time Vorapede dies. Therefore, its ability won't trigger.

It depends on whose turn it is. When multiple triggered abilities trigger since the last time SBAs were checked, they are put onto the stack in APNAP order.
If the Vorapede
dies on your turn, your Dread Slaver
's ability will go onto the stack, then your opponent's Vorapede
's undying ability will go onto the stack. The undying ability will resolve first, resulting in your opponent getting Vorapede
back with a +1/+1 counter on it.
If the Vorapede
dies on your opponent's turn, your opponent's Vorapede
's undying trigger will go onto the stack, then your Dread Slaver
's ability will go onto the stack. The Dread Slaver
's ability will resolve first, giving you control of the Vorapede
sans the +1/+1 counter.
