Double ability.
Asked by LikeMike 14 years ago
in magic, you cannot apply the same ability to a creature twice correct? as in blablablahh a 7/7 with double strike and double strike. but can you have a creature with first strike and double strike? because there both different abilities.
From a previous Q&A
First Strike and Double Strike essentially create a second combat damage step that occurs before the normal one.
Creatures with First Strike deals its combat damage in this special early damage step. Creatures with Double Strike deals damage on both the early AND the normal step.
So while a creature can have both abilities, they're basically redundant. Double Strike is an upgrade from First Strike.

Lifelink , Spirit Link btw. but like heres the abilities:
Dragon Fangs . having 2 cases of tramle doesnt stack. you get rollover dmg
Concerted Effort . covers pretty much all of them. u can give a flying creature Vault Skyward but they dont get double flying where only creatures with double flying or double reach can block them.

but the slight variants of Lifelink and Spirit Link gives you basically double lifelink.

They're not the same keyword, so Lifelink and Spirit Link work together. Do not call it "double lifelink," it is confusing to new Magic players.

I have apparently incorrectly assumed that there was an oracle text on "Spirit Link " or creatures with the same wording making them essentially the same as Lifelink . You know what assuming does.... thanks for the clarification guys, this comes in handy.

mafteechr wins the thread.
How would something have multiple instances of amplify? or gravestorn? or cascade? :P kidding...

+1 for mafteechr's last comment. "Double Lifelink" is confusing enough to players who have been around a while, let alone new players.

You are correct, at one time there was an oracle for Spirit Link and other effects that turned it into lifelink. However, around 10th Edition those cards were all re-errata'ed to have their original functionality restored. It's confusing to a degree, but the only card right now that has the "when this creature deals damage, you gain that much life" that is actually still errata'ed to lifelink is Loxodon Warhammer .
Any other time you see the phrase "When this creature deals damage, you gain that much life" it is not lifelink, but a separate and similar triggered effect.

Just for clarity, lifelink is a static ability and "whenever this creature deals damage" is a triggered ability. This is relevant when one has a life total that's low - if you are at 1 life and are being attacked by 7 1/1 saproling tokens and have a Wurmcoil Engine block one, you're still at 1, but if you have a 6/6 with "whenever this creature deals damage", you'd die.

the double strike over rides first strike. but you can have like 4 diff types of life link if worded correctly. like Paladin of Prahv doesnt have "lifelink" but it does in a way so giving him lifelink gives him double lifelink. but for your senario first strike creates a 2nd combat step where FS creatures hit before non FS creatures. with DS your creature gets the FS combat and gets to swing again in the non FS combat step.
