Doom Blade on PART black creatures

Asked by ZarBluestar 11 years ago

I had out a lkorozda guildmage. My opponent used a Doom Blade on it. I told him that he couldn't do it because it was part black. He responded with "It's not black, it's gold." Who;s right and why? If he's right, then what about cards like Golgari Longlegs

If a creature has ANY black symbols in its mana cost, including partially black hybrid symbols or Phyrexian mana symbols, it is a black creature and an illegal target for Doom Blade. Neither Korozda Guildmage or Golgari Longlegs are legal targets for Doom Blade.

Even artifacts with colored symbols in thier cmc are that color.

Nope. If it costs any black mana to cast, it's black.

"Gold" isn't actually a colour in magic. "Gold cards" as a term is just a casual way to say "Multicolored Non-artifacts" and was more a reference to the colour of the frame in old multicoloured cards than anything else.

Any time something in magic says "Color" it means "White, Green, Blue, Black or Red"

Korozda Guildmage is both a black and green card.

A cards color is always specified in its casting cost. However, if the text of the card specifically states otherwise then in that case, that is the color of the card. Examples are: Wheel of Fate , and Transguild Courier .

As already stated, Gold is not a color in Magic, just a casual term for "Multicolored Non-artifact" cards

So, his Doom Blade would have done nothing and fizzled, due to the fact that Korozda Guildmage is a black and green creature.

Hope this helps answer your question.

@Default404: That's not entirely correct. He would never have been able to target the Guildmage to begin with, so he can't cast the spell.

Yes that's true, you're right. I'm sorry I should have been more clear with my answer. I was just trying to simplify my response, but now that I think about that it would create confusion in the future for him during games.

Player 1: "No you can't put Doom Blade back in your hand, it fizzles."
Player 2: "No it doesn't"

LOL, Thanks for making sure we stay square. ;)

And as a further clarification, Korozda Guildmage isn't "part black"

It is black. It is green.
