Does Volo not work with Parallel Lives?

Asked by DavidBray 3 years ago

I've heard and read the ruling that says Volo, Guide to Monsters and Parallel Lives don't interact, specifically about the tokens not being "created".

Can someone explain more clearly, using the wording on the cards? I see "If an effect" - Volo's triggar - would put - not "create" - a token onto the battlefield - again, Volo's triggar - "put twice that many"

I don't say this to be argumentative, I just don't get why this isn't an interaction.

The reason there's no interaction is because Volo's ability doesn't make tokens. It makes a copy of a creature spell on the stack. The rules of the game say that a resolving copy of a creature spell creates a token of that creature on the battlefield (this is what the reminder text on Volo means). The token is being created by a game rule, not an effect, so Parallel Lives doesn't apply.

Rhadamanthus cheers, mate, super clear. So if I use Strionic Resonator to copy the triggar, that's fine, but the token entering the battlefield is almost its own card?

Yes, Strionic Resonator will work. The copy of the trigger will make another copy of the spell and it will resolve into another token of the creature. The key thing here is that Volo, Guide to Monsters introduces a sort of loophole where a game rule is doing something that you usually see from card effects, but it doesn't actually count as an "effect" for the purposes of other things that might care about it.

The rules do also treat the token as not being created. Even Primal Vigor which does not care whether it's an effect fails to double the tokens.

608.3b If the object that's resolving is a copy of a permanent spell, that object becomes a token permanent and is put onto the battlefield under the control of the spell’s controller. It is no longer a copy of a spell. The token put onto the battlefield this way is not "created" for the purposes of any replacement effects or triggered abilities that refer to creating a token.
