Does this combo work?

Asked by SquirrelPenguin 3 years ago

Meletis Charlatan + Dramatic Reversal + Sky Diamond + Sky Diamond + Sky Diamond + Sky Diamond + Stonecoil Serpent

Copy the Dramatic Reversal with Meletis Charlatan by paying for it with your three Sky Diamonds and tapping the other Sky Diamond to add one extra, then as a result they all untap so you can repeat the process and play Stonecoil Serpent as a infinity/infinity creature. How does this work if it even does work?

Yes, that works. Here's how it breaks down step by step:

  • You cast Dramatic Reversal
  • In response, you activate 4 Sky Diamonds and use 3 of the mana to activate Meletis Charlatan targeting Dramatic Reversal. You still have in your mana pool
  • Meletis Charlatan's ability resolves, creating a copy of Dramatic Reversal on top of the stack
  • The copy of Dramatic Reversal resolves, untapping Meletis Charlatan and the Sky Diamonds
  • Instead of letting the original Dramatic Reversal resolve, respond by activating 4 Sky Diamonds and using 3 of the mana to activate Meletis Charlatan targeting Dramatic Reversal. You now have in your mana pool
  • Keep it rolling

One more thing: the rules of the game don't allow for "infinity". You have to choose a specific number of times to loop the combo. Just pick your favorite big number.

Rhadamanthus technically you can get infinity, if one thing triggering triggers another, and that in turn triggers the original, it’s an infinite loop that actually has no end ;p

Omniscience_is_life, a loop like what you describe is the shortest-lived loop in the game. Once a chain of mandatory events creates a loop, the game is declared a draw (except for game with the limited range of influence option) provided no player can step in and end it.

Omniscience_is_life, Tylord2894, I don't think it is mandatory to tap permanents.

SquirrelPenguin, you are absolutely correct. The term "infinite" just doesn't describe this combo (or most combos). This is an "arbitrary" combo, so you can grow it to whatever size you wish. I was saying that truly "infinite" combos just end in a draw.

Tylord2894, I must say that I was not aware of that! Thanks for enlightening me ;D
