Does Rootborn Defenses counter a Supreme Verdict ?
Asked by JPrhema 12 years ago
My opponent had several creatures and tokens on the battlefield. I cast a Supreme Verdict . It says it can't be countered. He cast Rootborn Defenses in response. The wording on RD is "Populate. Creatures you control are indesctructible."
So, all my creatures were destroyed, but not his. Does RD resolve first because of stack order?; thus giving his creatures "indestructable" before my Supreme V. is able to resolve? The reasoning he gave is that Rootborn does not actually name a target or use the word "counter", therefore he can use it to save all his creatures.
I wasn't sure where this scenario is talked about in the official rules. I believe he was correct, just needed to verify i understand it correctly. Thanks
Yes, Rootborn Defenses would resolve first; as you stated, it's on the top of the stack.
It never "counters" anything, just prevents destroy effects from killing your creatures.

Thanks. It's nice to know there is a loophole for getting out from under Supreme Verdict :)

Also, even if Rootborn Defenses did target a specific target, it still isn't countering anything, so it would still be indestructible.

Thanks drakanar. I guess if I had Cancel , and the mana to pay, I couldve stopped his Rootborn from being cast. :)

Not quite. You could stop his Rootborn Defenses from resolving, but nothing can ever undo the act of casting something (unless the cast was illegal and the game was officially rewound to take back the action).

Yes, all his creatures are indestructible, and can not be destroyed by Supreme Verdict .
