Does Reality Scramble fizzle when the target is removed?

Asked by MoJoMiXuP 6 years ago

Hey all, I have a polymorph style EDH deck and am considering making room for the new card Reality Scramble but have a question. If I target one of my creatures intending to roll into a big bomb from my deck like Blightsteel Colossus, but an opponent removes my target creature before Reality Scramble resolves, what happens? I'm thinking the spell becomes countered as the target is invalid, but wanted to double check. Thanks for your answers in advance!

You are correct. Whenever all targets of a spell with targets are illegal, that spell is countered by the rules of the game.

Slight technicality, the spell is not countered, it simply is removed from the stack without resolving. Or "fizzles" as you said, but it is not countered and does not trigger things that trigger off of spells being countered, such as Multani's Presence.

Hmmm, apparently they changed that back in April of this year. Good catch.
