Does putting a card into play count as playing a spell?

Asked by Narm 9 years ago

Let's say I have Erayo, Soratami Ascendant in play. Then I put a card into play with something like AEther Vial, Braids, Conjurer Adept, or Garruk, Caller of Beasts? Does that count towards Erayo, Soratami Ascendant?

Short answer, no.

Long answer:

The phrases "play a spell" and "into play" are no longer used and have been replaced by "cast a spell" and "onto the battle field" or "enter(s) the battlefield."

Now that that is out of the way, putting something onto the battlefield (into play) does not constitute casting(playing) a spell. Casting a spell only happens when you either pay its mana cost or some effect lets you cast it without paying said cost. (ie Maelstrom Archangel)
