Does Magnetic Theft put the Equipment onto my creature?
Asked by Halidir_Orveck 13 years ago
With the rise of the Stoneblade and Swords decks in Legacy and Modern I had the brilliant thought, in the 10 cent common box at my local shop I found a card from Old Mirrodin, Magnetic Theft . Say my opponent fetches a Sword of Feast and Famine swings with it on his Mirran Crusader may I, before blocks are declared, use Magnetic Theft to steal the equipment?
*As long as there is a creature to equip it to other than the orignal Mirran Crusader.

Actually, Magnetic Theft can target any creature which is a legal target, including the one which is currently equipped. It just won't do anything in this case.
Magnetic Theft will attach the targeted equipment to the targeted creature. This will cause it to become unattached from any creature it was previously attached to. The control of the equipment will not change, so its controller may activate its equip ability to attach it to one of his or her creatures.
12/1/2004: Magnetic Theft can cause an Equipment one player controls to be attached to a creature another player controls. The controller of the Equipment can pay the equip cost to move the Equipment to a creature he or she controls (but only any time that player could cast a Sorcery).

It should be noted that Magnetic Theft isn't Standard. Just clarifying that since you referenced only Standard cards. Using this card in a Standard tournament would result in DQ.

Stoneblade is a Legacy deck my friend, and I know it isn't standard, I'm just finding some effective teck for Modern and Legacy

I know Stoneblade is Legacy. I apparently thought I read "Hero of Bladehold " somewhere in there. And that's more-or-less Standard-only.

Yeah, It was one of those silly ideas kind of a Chapin-esque "If everyone is doing it I'm gonna find a pretty useful Teck against it" like Ray of Erasure before all of the Tutors got banned in Legacy

As long as you have a creature to equip it to other than Mirran Crusader, then yes, you can steal the equipment. Note though, that the opposing player still controls the equipment, not you, so you cannot pay the equip cost to equip it to another creature. Your opponent can pay the equip cost to move the equipment back to one of his creatures.
