Does Heartbeat of Spring's effect simply double my mana?
Asked by infinitelennies 10 years ago
The card's oracle text is "Whenever a player taps a land for mana, that player adds one mana to his or her mana pool of any type that land produced." Does that double the mana produced by the land, or does it just add one mana to the effect? Basically, is it "add one mana of each type produced" or "add one mana of any one type produced?" An in game example would be if I have Heartbeat of Spring, a Forest, and a Flooded Grove out, how much mana could I get with those lands?
Please link all cards in the question.
No matter how much mana a land produces, Heartbeat of Spring will only give you one more mana. This is very relevant for something like Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx.
For your example, with those and a forest in play, you could get either 3 or 4 mana.
Tap Forest for
, and add
from Heartbeat of Spring, then tap Flooded Grove for
, and add
from Heartbeat of Spring...net mana would be
.
tap Forest to tap Flooded Grove for coloured mana, then add 1 more mana from Heartbeat of Spring.
Note that with Flooded Grove, if you tap for , you can only add
. Likewise, if you tap for
, you can only get
. However, if you tap it for
, you can add whichever of the two you want.

Heartbeat of Spring will only add one mana to your mana pool, no matter how much mana the land produced.
Compare the wording to Mana Reflection. The Reflexion explicitly doubles, while the Heartbeat just adds one.
