Does Concerted Effort affect each player's monsters or just mine?
Asked by Thundagawd 10 years ago
Pretty much what the title says. It says "During EACH player's upkeep", but on only specifies "Creatures YOU control". I'm asking because it's been the subject of many debates when I've played with friends, and the Gatherer rulings don't seem to specify this particular part.
Might seem like a stupid question, but English isn't my first language, so I don't entirely understand it myself =/

"You" in a card's text only ever means the card's controller. Concerted Effort triggers at the beginning of each player's upkeep, but the ability is only talking to you and will only affect your creatures.
If it was meant to affect each player's creatures during that player's turn, it would say "that player" instead of "you".

just compare it to effects such as found on Font of Mythos which refer to "that player" instead of "you"

The previous commenters have it right, it only affects your creatures.
The reason the card triggers every turn is so that the abilities your creature are sharing get "updated" if you play creatures during your turn.
For example, let's say that you start your turn controlling Master of Waves and a bunch of Elemental 1/0 U THS 5 tokens made by Master of Waves. At the beginning of your upkeep, Concerted Effort will trigger granting all of your creatures Protection from Red. If during your turn you play a Prognostic Sphinx, the ability will trigger again during your opponent's upkeep, and your team will gain Protection from Red, and Flying this time, so that if your opponent casts Stormbreath Dragon you can block it and they are going to be very sad.

Affects only your creatures during each players turn.

I also says "each upkeep" because the duration of it's effect is "until end of turn," so if it only happened during your upkeep your creatures wouldn't share their bonuses during your opponent's turn, which is kind of weak.

It affects only your creatures.
Just because it can trigger during your opponent's turns, doesn't mean that your opponent controls the ability.
