Does Athreos lose devotion??

Asked by Itacdutch87 3 years ago

I was playing against someone with an Athreos, Shroud-Veiled who's devotion had reached 7 so was a creature. I sacked two rat tokens to Chittering Witch which gave their Atraxa, Praetors' Voice -4 and killed it. My Dictate of Erebos triggered twice from the rat tokens and they were forced to sac two creatures. They argued that they didn't have to sac Athreos, Shroud-Veiled as he was no longer a creature. Is that right?

They can't sacrifice Athreos, Shroud-Veiled, but they do still have to sacrifice two creatures (if able).

When you killed their Atraxa, there are two Dictate of Erebos triggers on the stack. Before these go to resolve, the game sees that your opponent has 5 devotion to , which makes Athreos a non-creature enchantment. Thus, your opponent can't sacrifice their Athreos to the Dictate triggers.

It depends on what else your opponent has on the battlefield and what they decide to do when you activate Chittering Witch.

When you sacrifice a creature to activate the Witch, Dictate of Erebos triggers. The trigger is put onto the stack on top of the Witch activation and will resolve before the Witch activation resolves. If your opponent sacrifices a creature other than Athreos for the first Dictate trigger and this makes the devotion to drop below 7, then Athreos won't be a creature when it's time to sacrifice something to the second Dictate trigger.
