Does artifacts suffer from summoning sickness?
Asked by Bathory 12 years ago
Can I cast [[temple bell] and use its ability?
Only creatures are suffered by summoning sickness. All artifacts can be tapped the turn they come in.

That's why Sol Ring is so baller. Yes, it's that good. Only "baller" can describe it.

I'm really unsure as to why they thought that card would ever be balanced lol. Its only fair in EDH where you can only run one.

It's worth mentioning that artifact creatures do suffer summoning sickness. It works like this: "Is it a creature? Did it come under your control since the start of your last turn? If yes to both, summoning sickness. Otherwise, no summoning sickness."

Yes the creature over rides the artifact summoning sickness rule

@BrokenZygoma: Sol Ring was designed at a time when the game was so new that the designers didn't yet understand it well enough to see the issue. Also, they thought the average player would only buy a starter and a few boosters - period - and maybe do a little trading on the side. Uncommon and Rare cards wouldn't show up very often, and it would be even more unusual for multiples to be in a deck.

It is also important to recognise that any artifact that becomes a creature also sufferers from summoning sickness.

Eh, that depends Azure124. Creatures coming from cards like Angel's Tomb and Glint Hawk Idol don't necessarily come in with summoning sickness, which would defeat the purpose.

@CptDanger: Those cards don't make a creature "come in". The cards, themselves, become creatures. If you cast an Angel's Tomb on your turn, and then on that same turn cast another creature spell and wake it up, the animated Angel's Tomb is affected by summoning sickness and can't attack or use abilities with the Tap symbol in the cost.

That's what I meant. I should have been more clear and not as lazy when typing what I did. A better question is why I said "come in" even when I knew they 'become' creatures. =/

Essentially, everything has summoning sickness, but it only affects creatures. So if you play a non-creature permanent like an artifact or a planeswalker or a land, you can activate it's abilities as long as it's not a creature. If it turns into a creature (Inkmoth Nexus , Gideon Jura and Glint Hawk Idol are good examples), then summoning sickness starts to matter, and they can't attack.

Atmosck is correct here.
Every permanent has summoning sickness, only creatures are affected by it.
Thus if you have an artifact become a creature the same turn it came in it has summoning sickness. Same with Gideon Jura .
