Do Sword Effects stack?
Asked by avenged_arbiter 13 years ago
I have a Mirran Crusader out untapped and equipped with Swiftfoot Boots , and two Sword of War and Peace .
I attack the opponent and the basic damage done by the crusader will be 12 due to the double strike.
The question is will the both Sword of War and Peace effects stack and would trigger at the same time or will it just be understood to be one effect?
I'm just confused. Is it a good thing that he's equipped with the same thing or will it just be too redundant.
Thanks for the answers! :)

Whenever the Mirran Crusader deals combat damage, all relevant abilities will trigger and go on the stack. This means that each Sword of War and Peace will give one trigger per instance of combat damage to a player. Since Mirran Crusader has double strike, it will deal combat damage twice per combat phase - once during the First Strike Damage Step and once during the Normal Combat Damage Step. Since each Sword triggers once per instance of damage, per Sword, each damage step will put two triggers on the stack for a total of 4 all together.

In other words, yes, they stack. You'd get four instances of the swords combat-damage trigger off of this. It doesn't all happen at one time, though:
He'll hit, you'll put SoW&P #1's trigger on the stack and SoW&P #2's trigger on the stack; however, because priority is passed around at the end of any combat damage step, those triggers both resolve, dealing him damage and gaining you life, and then the second combat damage step happens, so he hits them again and you put both triggers on the stack again.
At the end of the day, they'll be taking 4x the number of cards in their hand worth of damage, and you'll gain 4x the number of cards in your hand worth of life.
It's important to remember that half the triggers resolve before he deals his second damage. That could be an important amount of damage or life-gain!
(Bonus round: If he was dual-wielding two Sword of Body and Mind s instead, you'd mill the top 40 cards off their deck and get 4 wolf tokens out of one unblocked attack!)

Since Mirran Crusader has double strike, he will deal combat damage twice in the combat step, once along with first strikers and once with normal creatures. Each of the Sword's abilities triggers upon the equipped creature dealing combat damage, and each Sword has it's abilities trigger separately. In the end you get two triggers from each sword.
