Do Creatures/Permanents die at the same time? or Can I choose the order on what card dies first?

Asked by Lazarus 12 years ago

For example I have three Slitherhead and a Lumberknot without a counter on the field. If I cast Golgari Charm and kill all the creatures on the board, will I be able to kill first my Slitherhead so that Lumberknot becomes bigger while surviving the -1/-1 effect?

The -1/-1 effect happens simultaneously. When Golgari Charm resolves, your creatures including Lumberknot will become 0/0s and when SBAs are checked they'll all be put into your graveyard.

You need to know a few things:

1) Creatures die as state-based actions.

2) Lumberknot has a triggered ability.

3) Triggered abilities wait until after SBAs have finished before they are put onto the stack.

Since the creatures will all die at once, you won't be able to save Lumberknot . Lumberknot 's ability will still trigger three times (once for each Slitherhead ) because creatures that ETB or LTB simultaneously "see" each other at that time, but the Lumberknot will be dead when the abilities resolve. Therefore, they won't do anything.

With things like Day of Judgment , card:Black Sun's Zenith, and Mutilate , if all of your creatures would die from it, they all die at the same time and you can't do anything while the effect is taking place. Once a spell resolves, you don't have priority to activate, cast, or respond to anything until the spell is finished resolving and you receive priority from your opponent.
