Do creatures with protection from black and demons prevent Reaper from the Abyss from killing them?
Asked by aMNKYonSTEROIDS 12 years ago
I have Reaper from the Abyss on the field, and my opponent has Riders of Gavony and Mirran Crusader , and let's say something small like Mentor of the Meek . Reaper from the Abyss has a Morbid effect that says: "At the beginning of each end step, if a creature died this turn, destroy target non-Demon creature." So let's say I play Tribute to Hunger and the person sacrifices Mentor of the Meek, and then I end my turn. At my end step, can Reaper from the Abyss's Morbid effect destroy either Riders of Gavony or Mirran Crusader, or does the protection from black and Demons keep them both safe?

Since Reaper from the Abyss 's ability targets creatures it cannot legally target something with Protection for black or protection from Demons.

That makes sense, but the thing I wasn't sure about was whether or not his Morbid ability counts as a "Demon" Spell. I mean it would make sense since he is a Demon, but it wouldn't just count as a regular "black" spell?

Any ability a creature has is subject to it's creature subtype. Activated abilities are not the same as spells, but if something has protection from a certain subtype it cannot be targeted by cards of that subtype.
Something with protection from elves cannot be targeted by card:Eyeblight's Ending or Greenhilt Trainee 's ability.

Permanents that have protection can not: Take damage, Enchant/Equip, Block or be Targeted by spells or abilities of cards that they have protection from.
