Do cards that give creatures flying give it to them as they come into play or after?

Asked by RoyLancaster 11 years ago

I didn't really know how to phrase this question, but here goes an explanation. Say I have Wonder in my graveyard and an Island in play. If I also have Warden of Evos Isle in play, then does it reduce the cost of all my creatures, because technically, they all have flying from Wonder ? Or do they come in at normal cost, and then gain flying after they're cast, so Warden of Evos Isle doesn't affect their casting cost any?

Wonder only affects creature from the moment they enter the battlefield to when they leave the battlefield. A card can only be a creature when it is on the battlefield (elsewhere, it is a "creature card." Wonder only affects creatures, not creature cards. Warden of Evos Isle will not reduce the cost of the creature, but a card like Archon of Redemption will see it enter the battlefield with flying.

For an example of a card that grants abilities to creature cards not in play, see Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir , and note the difference in wording.

TL;DR: Wonder will not work with Warden of Evos Isle to make all of your creatures cost less.

While casting the creature it does not have flying, but when it resolves on the field it will have flying.

Wonder says "creatures you control have flying." When a spell or ability references a permanent type without also using a phrase like "[permanenttype] cards," then it references only permanents. Permanents only exist on the battlefield. Therefore, Wonder doesn't affect non-permanents.

When you cast your creatures, they're spells. They won't become permanents until they resolve. Therefore, Wonder 's ability won't give your creature spells flying, and Warden of Evos Isle 's ability won't apply the cost reduction to them.

Wonder only gives creatures that are in play flying. So Warden of Evos Isle won't lower the casting cost of creatures that don't say "flying" on them.

You only control creatures that are on the battlefield, and cards in your hand aren't on the battlefield. Since the Warden only checks cards you cast, which must therefore not be on the battlefield to begin with, it will not reduce the casting cost of any creatures that do not explicitly contain the keyword "Flying" in their description.
