Dispersing an Oblivion Ring?

Asked by beatmick 13 years ago

So we all know of the interaction [Cloudshift] has with certain cards, right? Well, what happens if I play an [Oblivion Ring] on an opponent's whatever, and immediately use [Disperse] on my O' Ring before it gets to resolve? Would I permanently exile whatever it is I enchanted with O' Ring, while giving myself a second chance to cast O' Ring again? And if that works, then wouldn't [Unsummon]'ing my [Fiend Hunter] work in the same way?

You need to use double brackets to link cards.

You cast Oblivion Ring . Oblivion Ring then resolves and enters the battlefield, triggering its ETB triggered ability. With the ETBTA on the stack, you cast Disperse , targeting Oblivion Ring . Disperse resolves, causing Oblivion Ring 's LTBTA to trigger and go onto the stack. Since the LTBTA resolves first, the ETBTA no longer has an ability linked to it that would return the card it exiles. The end result is that card being permanently exiled.

Also, note that Oblivion Ring does not enchant anything and does not target anything on casting. Only Oblivion Ring 's ETBTA targets, and only after Oblivion Ring itself resolves.

Unsummon ing Fiend Hunter would indeed work in the same way.

Alright, yeah, I remembered the double bracket thing as soon as I posted it, unfortunately you can't edit after posting, and it's been a while since I used the site.

I figured that's what happens, just wanted to be positively sure. Thanks for the clarification.
