Devoted Druid interaction with Vizier of Remedies

Asked by Supersaulty 1 year ago

I ordered a playset of both just a week or so ago, now, when I read it... So because of the Vizier of Remedies the Devoted Druid doesn't put a -1/-1 counter on the Devoted Druid, so it seems to me it WOULDN'T untap...

This combo does work. The cost to activating Devoted Druid’s untap ability is placing a -1/-1 counter on it. You pay the cost and Vizier of Remedies’ replacement effect is also implicated, reducing the number of -1/-1 counters placed in Devoted Druid.

However, because you “paid” the cost (even though the cost was reduced by the replacement effect) the untap ability still goes on the stack.

This means you can infinitely activate Devoted Druid, as the replacement effect eliminates any -1/-1 counters that would be placed on the Druid.

This is different than something like Solemnity, which prevents you from even paying the cost in the first place - with Vizier, the cost is still paid, but reduced, whereas a blanket prevention of placing counters on something prevents the cost from ever being paid.
