Detention Sphere, how you work?

Asked by Apex_Promethean 9 years ago

If I have Stormbreath Dragon and he uses a Detention Sphere is it invalid since it has protection or since it has blue and white it overrules the protection?

Since white is in the card it cannot target it

You can't target Stormbreath Dragon unless you use something like Trait Doctoring . Once you exile one, you can exile all of them, as the rest of the ability doesn't target.

A better example is Fleecemane Lion . Once you exile one, you exile all of them, even the monstrous ones, even though they have hexproof. Even though you can't target them, the second part of the ability doesn't target, so it's a bit like a wrath, Merciless Eviction for example, but it's specific to the named card.

A card with multiple colors counts as all of those colors for things that care about color. Detention Sphere is White, so Stormbreath Dragon is protected from it (protection stops targeting).

This is just for the lolz, but why not, right? Let's have fun.

There actually is another way to exile Stormbreath Dragon with Detention Sphere without modifying the dragon's protection with Trait Doctoring or similar effect. All you need to do, is have this (I was trying to link it, but couldn't):

Then, you just pay 1 to change its name to Stormbreath Dragon and then cast Detention Sphere , targeting it. Because it doesn't have protection, it is a legal target and because Detention Sphere also exiles all permanents with the same name (without actually targeting them), your opponent's Stormbreath Dragon will be exiled despite its protection.
