Demonic Pact + Avarice Totem?

Asked by Bockduck 9 years ago

If I got Demonic Pact and wait until only the fourth options is left and then Avarice Totem. Does that mean my opponent needs to pick the fourth option and loose the game?

Please link your cards when asking a question, makes it a lot easier.

Demonic Pact Avarice Totem

Yes, this works. Always check a card's Gatherer entry for FAQ's, like this one:

  • It doesnt matter who has chosen any particular mode. For example, say you control Demonic Pact and have chosen the first two modes. If an opponent gains control of Demonic Pact, that player can choose only the third or fourth mode.

Just make sure you give it away before Demonic Pact triggers for a 4th time. If it does you'll still control the trigger, and it'll make you lose the game.

I'm not able to follow the play here. Avarice Totem's ability gives itself away while you gain control of something else. What exactly is going on in the original question?

I think the combo is:

1: Activate Avarice Totem's ability targeting Demonic Pact

2: In response to this Activate Avarice Totem's ability targeting a more useful permanent than Demonic Pact

Now when the stack resolves Avarice Totem will swap with an opponents permanent then swap with the Demonic Pact, leaving your opponent with Demonic Pact and you with Avarice Totem and whatever permanent you took.

Got it, thanks. I should have known better, considering I used to do that trick with Phyrexian Infiltrator a million years ago.

But how does the "switching" of permanents work? I didn't really get that.

See comment #4.

Avarice Totem's ability exchanges control of Avarice Totem and one other permanent. It doesn't just give control of one permanent away.

You activate Avarice Totem's ability twice (the second activation is in response to the first). The first time, you target Demonic Pact. The second time, you target some permanent your opponent controls.

When the second ability resolves (remember that the topmost object on the stack resolves first), you switch control of Avarice Totem with your opponent's permanent. When the first ability resolves, your opponent gives you back Avarice Totem and takes Demonic Pact.

Deck help requests should be posted in one of the Deck Help forums; the Q&A handles only questions about the game rules. You'll get more feedback through the forums, anyway.

(To answer your question, though, Bazaar Trader is much more straightforward. As is Donate).

Bazaar Trader says just Artifact, creature or land. Nothing about enchantments.

Reading is tech.

Still, those effects will be cheaper. You should make a thread in General or in the appropriate forum that asks for efficient ways to accomplish your goal. Or you could start a deck list and go to one of the Deck Help forums.
