Dark Ritual lasting time?
Asked by MonsterFinder221 11 years ago
Alright. I have a question that is still bothering a friend of mine:
If you cast Dark Ritual into play to buff up a card that says "Power and toughness equal to the number of swamps you control", and you have 3 swamps. Is the +3/+3 caused by the Dark Ritual a one time thing or is it until the creature dies or gets exiled?
Dark Ritual wouldn't work with that. Dark Ritual produces 3 black mana, not 3 swamps. Swamps are a basic land and black mana is what they produce. So, if the creature has power and toughness equal to the number of swamps you control, then casting a dark ritual will do nothing except add mana to your mana pool.

But what if the creature mentioned earlier had a black version of Dragon Mantle ?

Let's say the creature is Looming Shade instead. You'd have to spend the black mana in your mana pool to activate the ability. The buffs would last until the end of the turn because that's the duration specified by the effect.

You may need to read the rules for yourself if you learned how to play from this guy. It seems as if he may have taught you very wrongly if he said that dark ritual had anything to do with swamps at all.

I did not learn from him, if anything, He learned from me . I swear, that guy lies almost on a daily basis, he actually puts the equipment of the deceased creature to the graveyard.

When I first started playing Magic, one of the people I learned from used to tell me that the effect of Dark Ritual was to search your library for three swamps and put them onto the battlefield, so.

Same. One of my friends would use a Rootbound Crag as a (tap to) fetch land, and I had no idea he was wrong.

"The number of swamps you control" means the number of cards you control with the type "Swamp" and has nothing to do with how much mana you have in your mana pool.
Dark Ritual simply adds mana to your mana pool.
Dark Ritual does not effect a creature whose power and toughness are based on swamps. Only actually having swamp cards in play will do that.
