damage to an indestructible planeswalker

Asked by MoJoMiXuP 7 years ago

if an opponent has Avacyn, Angel of Hope on the battle field as well as a planeswalker and I swing in with my Creeping Tar Pit redirecting to the planewalker, is their loyalty count affected, or does the indestructible nullify the damage?

No, a Planeswalker will die when it's Loyalty Counters fall to 0 much like the way creatures die when their toughness is 0.

EDIT: It is true that Indestructibility protects your creature from dying to combat damage, but that's because they are marked for the damage. If they lose Indestructible, the marked damaged will apply and then kill them. Having a Planeswalker's Loyalty go to 0 is like giving an Indestructible creature -1/-1 counters and causing their toughness to be 0.

Being indestructible means that your Planeswalker can't die to cards like Ruinous Path or Dreadbore.

Important distinction, you can redirect noncombat damage to a planeswalker, which is a decision made upon resolution of the spell or ability causing the damage. You can attack a planeswalker with a creature, which is a decision made during the declare attackers step, before blockers are chosen.

Either way, indestructible on a planeswalker does not prevent the damage so counters will still be removed, and a planeswalker with 0 loyalty will still be put into the graveyard as a state-based action.
