Counter and Life Question

Asked by tasondag 8 years ago

Hey everyone, thanks much in advance! I'm just trying to figure out all the intricacies of lifelink and some counters could really use some clarification. Here's the scenario: I have 20 life, on the field I have Serra Ascendant, 2 Ajani's Pridemate one of them equipped with Sword of Light and Shadow, Rhox Faithmender, and Elspeth Tirel. I attack with Serra Ascendant, both Ajani's Pridemate, and use Elspeth Tirel +2 life gain ability.

I would gain 1*2 life (from Serra's lifelink and Rhox)

I would gain 3*2 life (from Ajani's +3 sword and Rhox)

I would put 2 counters on each Ajani (Serra lifelink, Ajani with Sword life gain)

I would gain 4*2 life (from Elspeth 1 life gain for each creature and Rhox)

I would put 4 counters on each Ajani (1 counter for each creature life gained from due to Elspeth's Ability)

So my life would be 36 (20+16)? Is that correct?

First, loyalty abilities may only be activated at sorcery speed. You cannot use them in combat. You would need to activate Elspeth Tirel's +2 ability during your precombat main phase.

You control four creatures, one of which is Rhox Faithmender. Elspeth Tirel's +2 ability will gain you eight life. This will trigger each Ajani's Pridemate's ability once (the loyalty ability is a single instance of lifegain, NOT multiple instances), and you'll be at 28 life.

Once you resolve those abilities and get to combat, you can attack. If you attack as you describe, you'll gain another eight life (two from Serra Ascendant+Rhox Faithmender and six from Sword of Light and Shadow+Rhox Faithmender). This will put you at 36 life. Unfortunately for you, combat damage is dealt simultaneously, so Serra Ascendant won't become a 6/6 until after combat damage is dealt.

This will trigger each Ajani's Pridemate's ability two more times.

You'll get three +1/+1 counters on each Ajani's Pridemate at the end of everything: one for the loyalty ability and two for combat.
