Copying Clever Impersonator Abilities

Asked by halander1 9 years ago

Hey, so I was wondering, for the card Clever Impersonator, if I were to copy Clever Impersonator itself with another card (Followed Footsteps), does that mean I get a Clever Impersonator or a copy of target card. Furthermore, say I were to use Clever Impersonator to copy an enchantment, if I tried to use Followed Footsteps on it, would it fizzle or work completely, and if it did work completely, do I get to choose a new target for the new enchantment. (As a matter of fact, do I get to choose a new target for the new enchantment if I just copied it with Clever Imperosnator)

If you make a copy of a Clever Impersonator that is copy of a creature with Followed Footsteps, it will enter the battlefield as the creature copied with the Clever Impersonator.

Followed Footsteps is an Aura with "Enchant Creature." It can't enchant a noncreature permanent, even if the permanent was originally a creature.

In order to get copies of new things you can have clever impersonator not enter as a copy (it is a may ability). Of course, as a 0/0 it will likely immediately die, but if you have something pumping toughness (like a Gauntlet of Power set to blue, you can then enchant it with Followed Footsteps and get a new thing each turn.

If you copy a copy, you get a copy of what the original copy copied. Omega13 already described it more understandably, so I get to write that sentence :D Either way, it's backed up by the following rules:

706.2. When copying an object, the copy acquires the copiable values of the original object's characteristics (...). The "copiable values" are the values derived from the text printed on the object (that text being name, mana cost, color indicator, card type, subtype, supertype, rules text, power, toughness, and/or loyalty), as modified by other copy effects, (...)

706.3. The copy's copiable values become the copied information (...). Objects that copy the object will use the new copiable values.

As for your last question (that I didn't see answered yet): You can copy enchantments as normal, but I'm going to assume you meant Auras - and yes, if you copy Followed Footsteps with Clever Impersonator, you will get to attach it to a permanent you choose.

303.4f. If an Aura is entering the battlefield under a player's control by any means other than by resolving as an Aura spell, and the effect putting it onto the battlefield doesn't specify the object or player the Aura will enchant, that player chooses what it will enchant as the Aura enters the battlefield. The player must choose a legal object or player according to the Aura's enchant ability and any other applicable effects.

Also, determining a target never "fizzles" - in order to successfully cast a spell or resolve an ability, you have to choose legal targets (or no targets where allowed, such as in this case). For example, if no player controls any creatures, you won't be able to case Followed Footsteps, because you won't be able to choose a legal target for it.
