Combat damage replacement effects interactions!

Asked by UniqueUserID 7 years ago

I was trying to make the ever so useless Silkenfist Fighter playable. However now I have a lot of questions regarding Combat Damage effects....

1) Reconnaissance allows you remove a creature from combat. If Laccolith Grunt was blocked does it ALSO remove his damage effect too?

2) From what I read Combat Damage is strictly the damage from attackers and blockers in the Combat damage step. So you cannot use Curse of Stalked Prey and Arcane Teachings to "ping" damage to get the bonus since it does not count.

3) Is this following scenario correct? I have a Silkenfist Fighter with Arcane Teachings attached. I also control Reconnaissance and Always Watching . Can I declare attackers, then ping for 1 damage. Then if blocked Silkenfist Fighter untaps, so I can ping for another 1 damage. Here I can continue to attack OR withdraw from combat with Reconnaissance and ping for the 3rd and final time. Is this correct?

Thank you for reading!

  1. If Laccolith Grunt's ability has already triggered, removing it from combat won't go back and "un-trigger" the ability. The fact that it's no longer in combat and wouldn't have dealt any combat damage for its ability to prevent doesn't matter.

  2. That's correct. Combat damage is the damage creatures assign/deal equal to their power in the combat damage step of the combat phase. Damage from any other abilities doesn't count.

  3. That's a legal sequence of plays, and you're correct on the result. Doesn't change the fact that it's totally bizarre. :P

  1. No. Reconnaissance will not stop non-combat damage being dealt by the resolution of an ability from an attacking creature.

  2. if any damage being dealt is the result of a spell or ability, that is non-combat damage, even if it's in the combat phase. Otherwise, it is combat damage.

  3. Yes.

Regarding #3: Wait a minute. In UniqueUserID's scenario, the attack and block has already happened. Why would he get to "continue to attack?" He's already attacked and been blocked. Combat has happened. There's no more combat from which to withdraw. Seems to me he's only going to get to ping for the first two.

Please explain. Thanks.

What he means is he can decide to leave his creature as an attacking creature, or remove it from combat via Reconnaissance to get an extra 1 damage in. He stil has 3 chances to do this:

  1. End of the declare blockers step.

  2. Combat damage step.

  3. End of combat step.
