clarification on spellskite

Asked by sabrepaisan 12 years ago

So im aware of its ability but just want to clear up how deep it goes. If i have Spellskite on the field and play another creature, my opponent then counters, can i activate its ability to direct the counter onto Spellskite . Or if an opponent casts Rancor can i activate it to put Rancor onto Spellskite ? Just want to make sure im optimizing its usage. Thanks in advance.

You can only change the target of a spell or ability if the new target would be legal. You can't redirect a Counterspell to Spellskite because Spellskite isn't a spell. It's a permanent.

You can, however, change the target of Rancor to Spellskite . Note that this only works if Rancor is a spell because Auras only target as spells. Also, control of Rancor won't change.

You can't change a counterspell like Cancel to Spellskite , it isn't a legal target for Cancel since it isn't a spell.

You can redirect Rancor onto Spellskite , since an Aura has a target when it's cast, and Spellskite is a legal target.

Because Spellskite 's ability can target any spell, you're allowed to activate it in the examples you give, but that doesn't always mean it will do anything. When you're changing the target of something, you can only change it to a legal target. A Spellskite on the battlefield isn't a legal target for Counterspell , so trying to change its target to Spellskite doesn't work. An aura spell has a target and Spellskite is a legal target for Rancor , so in that example Rancor will end up on Spellskite instead of wherever it was going before.

So Rancor could be redirected before resolution, however my opponent still controls it, right? And that sucks about the counterspells. But it would be so broken if it could though.

Right, changing the target of a spell doesn't change its controller, so your opponent would still control the permanent that the Rancor spell becomes after it resolves.
