Champion of Lambholt counters

Asked by kcom 4 years ago

If I were to cast a Larger Than Life and target Champion of Lambholt to give it +4/+4, would that trigger the ability to make creatures with power less than Champion unblockable or do you have to add those counters via creatures?

Though Champion of Lambholt has its second ability to put +1/+1 counters on itself, it doesn't matter the method that was used to change the Champion's power. Its first ability still works even if its power is increased only until end of turn.

reading the card explains the card. champion does not "make creatures with power less than champions unblockable". it says "creatures with power less than champion's power can't block creatures you control". the first ability also does not "trigger", nor does it care about "how" its power was increased. it only cares about what its power actually is.

It's also important to note that Champion of Lambholt doesn't have a triggered ability "to make creatures with power less than Champion unblockable."

What it does have is a static ability that makes it so creatures with power less than Champion's can't block creatures you control (but creatures with equal or greater power still can), and a triggered ability to put counters on Champion when other creatures ETB under your control. The ability doesn't make your creatures unblockable, it restricts how your opponent may declare blockers.

But as Yesterday mentioned, it doesn't matter how Champion's power got to whatever value it's at, only what that value is when it's time to declare blockers.

So a Champion with no counters but with Larger Than Life cast on it will be a 5/5. This means when it's time for your opponent to declare blockers, anything they have with power 4 or less can't block any of your creatures, but any creatures they have with power 5 or greater still can.
