Chalice of the Void Interactions

Asked by GottaBeThatGuy 8 years ago

Probably dumb questions but hey, I'm still pretty new.

  1. X costs are considered 0, correct? Therefore I could cast Chalice of the Void where X=2 without it countering itself?

  2. If I have a Chalice of the Void resolved with X=1 and have, for example, a Coretapper and Power Conduit out. If they cast a 2 drop, can I tap my core tapper to give my chalice a second counter, thereby countering their spell?

When a spell is on the stack, the value of X is used to calculate the value of . Basically, when you cast a spell for a cost that includes , you announce the value of X. For as long as that spell is on the stack, its converted mana cost uses the declared value of X.

For example, Repeal cast for X=5 has a converted mana cost of 6 while on the stack.

If you cast Chalice of the Void for X=2, the CMC will be 4.

is 0 in all zones other than the stack, and it's 0 on the stack only when no value has been declared for X or when X is declared to be 0.

For your second question, no. Triggered abilities don't trigger retroactively. If Chalice of the Void doesn't have the appropriate number of charge counters on it when a spell is being cast, its ability won't trigger for that spell.

  1. I'm not sure I understand the question 100%, but here goes: When a spell is on the stack (after it gets cast but before it starts resolving), an in its cost counts as whatever number was chosen for it. A Chalice of the Void spell with X=2 will have a converted mana cost of 2+2=4.

  2. Chalice triggers when a spell of the appropriate mana cost gets cast. By the time you have an opportunity to respond to a spell and add counters with another spell or ability, the point where Chalice would have triggered has already passed. The line of play you suggest doesn't work.
