Chalice of the void and Fuse
Asked by SwiftDeath 11 years ago
There was a chalice of the void in play for 1 and I was wondering how it interacted with cards like Wear / Tear . Also how would this be for cards with flashback cards like Faithless Looting ?

The CMC for split cards is their combined mana costs. In the case of Wear / Tear , it would be 3, so the chalice would not interact with it. For flashback, I'm pretty sure that it only counts what's printed on the top-right of the card, seeing as how flashback costs are alternative and don't count toward a card's CMC.
In other words, faithless looting would be countered, even if flashbacked, but wear/tear would not.

Wait no, the CMC for wear/tear is either 1, 2, or 3, depending on which half you cast or if you fuse them. What I said about flashback still stands though.

@hochmaster: That's incorrect.
The CMC of a split card in all zones except the stack is the CMC of each side - split cards have two values for CMC. When a split card is on the stack, its CMC is the CMC of the side that was case. If the spell was fused, it has the combined CMC of both halves.
If you cast Wear / Tear choosing Tear , Chalice of the Void would counter it. If you cast Wear or fused the spell, Chalice of the Void would do nothing.
Also, a card's CMC is always derived from its mana cost regardless of what cost was paid to cast it. Faithless Looting always has CMC 1.

I learn to correct myself if nothing else on these Q&As; especially before somebody does it for me.
