Cathar's Crusade + Skullclamp interaction?

Asked by Balzac 8 years ago

So, my Commander is Nahiri, the Lithomancer. I've played this combo some times, but now that I am thinking about it I might have played it wrong.

Consider I have Nahiri, the Lithomancer, Cathars' Crusade and Skullclamp on the battlefield. I get to +2 my Nahiri getting a 1/1 Kor Soldier token. He enters the battlefield, triggering Cathars' Crusade... But what if I attach the Skullclamp on him? Does he go 2/0 and die or does the +1/+1 counter hit him first, turning 3/1 and staying alive?

My assumption is that since the counter trigger is on the stack, the token will die and then receive the counters - well, not actually because he is dead, but all my other creatures will still get the +1/+1 counters.

Also, on a side note. I'm guessing this does not work the same with Dictate of Heliod, because the +2/+2 is a static ability and does not go on the stack. Am I correct?

Please help :)

You are correct on both counts. The token will die due to SBAs before Cathars' Crusade's trigger resolves. With Dictate of Heliod it will not die because when SBAs are checked it will be a 4/2 and won't die because of SBAs.

Just a note: Nahiri, the Lithomancer says you "may attach an equipment" so you could make the 1/1 token, choose not to attach the Skullclamp, get the +1/+1 counter from Cathars' Crusade, and then pay to equip it Skullclamp normally.
