Obelisk Spider's second triggered ability + Supernatural Stamina
Asked by MrGameAndScotch 7 years ago
If played Supernatural Stamina on my Obelisk Spider and block any creature that wouldn't die during the Combat Damage Step (eg. The Locust God), does the Obelisk Spider come back before it's first triggered ability resolves, making it's second triggered ability resolve, too? Personally, I think yes, because of the following procedure:
Damage is dealt, the stack looks like this:
Top of the stack
Obelisk Spider's 1st ability
Bottom of the stack
Before anything resolves, Obelisk Spider dies, making the stack look like this:
Top of the stack
Effect of Supernatural Stamina
Obelisk Spider's 1st ability
Bottom of the stack
Only then the stack begins to resolve, so Obelisk Spider is back on the battlefield when Obelisk Spider's 1st ability resolves.
Am I right or am I missing something? Thanks in advance!
In the scenario you mentioned, after everything is over, the enemy god would be dead. You would have a tapped spider. They would be down 1 life and you would be up one life.

Hey Shane, you're right. I didn't account the +2/+0 Supernatural Stamina gives you. But regarding the second ability resolving even if Obelisk Spider doesn't come back: The oracle text says otherwise:
If Obelisk Spider deals combat damage to a creature at the same time Obelisk Spider is dealt lethal damage, its first triggered ability will put a -1/-1 counter on the other creature. However, because Obelisk Spider has left the battlefield before that ability resolves, its last ability wont trigger.

The first ability triggers off of combat damage, but is not put onto the stack until after state-based actions are checked. This means, when you get priority to put triggers on the stack, both the -1/-1 counter trigger and the return to battlefield trigger will be waiting to be put on the stack. Because you control both triggers you'll choose the order you put them on the stack and essentially get to choose whether the spider will return to see the -1/-1 counter be put on or not.

Just so you know, even if your spider didn't come back to life the second ability would still resolve.
