Can you trigger Iname as One's second ability as your Commander?

Asked by Yesterday 6 years ago

If Iname as One is your commander and it would go to your graveyard, are you able to trigger its second ability which triggers when you chose to exile it instead of putting it into your graveyard, and then put it into the command zone? Or is putting the creature into the command zone a replacement effect and so Iname as One never hits exile to trigger its ability?

Also, how do you pronounce "Iname"? Is it in-aim or in-ah-may?

I say E-na-may.

The ability will trigger, provided you allow Iname to die (for to the graveyard) and choose to exile it. You can replace the exile with a return to the command zone. The "if you do" clause means "if you choose to take this action." Even if the action itself is replaced, you'll meet the requirement.

If you choose to put it into your command zone instead of your graveyard, it's ability won't trigger because it never enters the graveyard.

What you can do is let it enter the graveyard, triggering it's ability, and on resolution instead of exiling it, put it into your command zone. The only danger here is getting Stifled, which would permanently leave your commander in the graveyard (save for other means of getting him into another zone).

As for the name, I'm puzzled, but if it's supposed to be Japanese, you'd pronounce it e-nah-meeh.

I say the first, but that isn't an official rules thing, that is just how i say a name lol.

You misstated a few things in your question so I am going to state how Iname as One would function as your commander in reference to his second ability. When Iname dies you can have it go to the command zone instead of into the graveyard. This is a replacement effect and so the second ability would not trigger. If you let Iname go to the graveyard the second ability will trigger. When the ability resolves you get the chance to exile Iname from the graveyard and return a spirit from your graveyard to the battlefield. When you pay this optional cost you again have the option to send him to the command zone as a replacement effect. If you send him to the command zone at this time the cost has still been paid and you will get the effect.

TL:DR Putting your commander in the command zone is a replacement effect, but you can return a spirit and put Iname in the command zone if you replace the exile instead of replacing going to the graveyard.

It hasn't been addressed yet, but I'd also like to point out that Iname's first ability only functions if you cast it from your hand, not from your command zone.

As far as the name's concerned: I couldn't find a proper-resolutioned Japanese card image, but I realized that there are other cards with that creature on it (by people who like long file and directory names, apparently).
On there, the name's spelled "", which is supertitled in furigana as "" - (i-na-me). [The preview shows neither the kanji nor the hiragana, so I guess you'll have to take my word for it. Maybe it's going to show up in the full post...]
