Can you respond to uncounterability from Vexing Shusher?

Asked by JaredMatthewsArtwork 11 years ago

I know this sounds like a weird, kind of stupid question, but I'm wondering if you can still counter something if Vexing Shusher has been activated. In magic pretty much everything can go above something else in the stack. If Vexing Shusher s ability is used can't the opponent respond with a counter before the ability resolves? or does shusher's abilty auto-fizzle counters no matter what?

If you have two counters in hand, and are trying to stop a spell from your opponent who controls a Vexing Shusher , then you'll need both counters... and for them not to have two open mana.

If they cast their spell, and you cast your first counter, they can respond with the Shusher's ability. Before it resolves, you can always cast your second counter targeting the unwanted spell, but if they have more free mana they can just activate the ability again on top of that second counter.

Alright, I figured that was how it worked but I wasn't sure. Thanks!

A way to remember it is that the stack has not resolved anything yet. Their spell went on the stack, then your counter, then Vexing Shusher 's ability. The stack hasn't resolved anything yet and you can still add to it. So you put on another counter targeting the original spell.

If the stack starts resolving at this point, your second counter will counter the spell, then Vexing Shusher 's ability will try to resolve, but its target is no longer there so the ability will be countered, same with the first counter you played.

Or you could "counter target activated ability" with spells like Trickbind , Voidslime and Squelch
