Can you react to Bane of Bala Ged's ability?

Asked by ------ 8 years ago

2 questions:

1)

I declare Bane of Bala Ged as attacker, it's the only attacking creature.

My opponent plays Celestial Flare. Now, does he still need to exile 2 permanents from the Banes ability?

2)

I declare Bane of Bala Ged as attacker,my opponent only has 2 Eldrazi Scions.

Can he chose to sacrifice the Scions for mana before he needs to exile 2 permanents?

Thx in advance. :)

  1. Yes, Once abilities trigger they exist independently of their sources and will still resolve unless countered or exiled from the stack.

  2. Yes, once the ability triggers players must pass priority before it can resolve. When your opponent has priority they can sac the Scions for mana.

Once an ability triggers or is activated, it exists independently of its source. Regardless of what happens to the source, the ability will still be on the stack, and it will still resolve. Given this information, and because Celestial Flare can only target an attacking or blocking creature, and because the act of attacking with Bane of Bala Ged triggers its ability, there's no way that Celestial Flare can be used at a time that would prevent or otherwise cancel the triggered ability and allow you to avoid the exile effect.

Your opponent could choose to sacrifice the Eldrazi Scions in response to Bane of Bala Ged's ability, but he or she would still have to exile two permanents when the ability resolves. Note that the ability does not target anything, so the defending player must choose two of the permanents he or she controls when the ability resolves.

In situation 1, yes he would still need to sac, as Bane was declared an attacker and his ability triggered.

In 2, he could sac them for mana in response to the attack trigger, but he would still need to exile 2 permanents. If he controls nothing besides the scions, he won't exile anything. But if he controls lands, etc. (which is more likely) he would have to exile those.
