Can someone go over "Wastes" with me?
Asked by mrfr1day 9 years ago
So for Oath we have Waste lands. I thought that any card that has the Waste symbol(whether it be a casting cost or an ability cost) required the player to tap a Waste Land for mana in order to play. But I recently discovered that you can pay for Eldrazi Displacer's ability with any mana. Can someone explain to me how Waste Lands and colorless mana differ?

First, there is no difference between "Wastes" mana and colorless mana. Wastes make colorless mana, the only thing that has changed is the symbol: from
to
.
Now, in order to activate Eldrazi Displacer's ability you need to pay
. The
can be paid with mana of any type. It can be
, it can be
, it can even be
, but it just needs some sort of mana. The
can ONLY be paid with colorless mana, or
. This needs to be produced by a mana source that makes colorless mana: Wastes, Unknown Shores, Holdout Settlement, etc.
