can I use a protection spell from Sword of Light and Shadow
Asked by moneyj75 11 years ago
My brother attached Sword of Light and Shadow
to his Ruric Thar, the Unbowed
. He only attacks with him. I cast Safe Passage
. but because his Ruric has the Sword of Light and Shadow he says he can still do damage. is this true? im not targeting his creature im only protecting myself from the damage he can inflict on me.
Thank you for that answer, i am a newbie so i have a ton of other questions I will be asking. LOL.

raithe000 is correct.
Global effects which are usually worded using "all" or "each" do not target anything and therefore are not prevented by having protection from its relevant colors.
Such as a creature with protection from white would still be affected by Supreme Verdict or Glorious Anthem . Or damage from a creature with protection from white would be prevented by Safe Passage . However, Inquisitor's Snare would not prevent damage in this case as the creature with protection from white would be an illegal target.

To correct myself slightly, damage dealt as a result of a global effect would be prevented by anything with protection from that source's qualities. As explained by D in DEBT, damage from relevant sources is prevented.

Keep in mind that you will still take 6 damage from Ruric Thar, the Unbowed because his triggered ability will resolve before Safe Passage does.

It is not true. Protection prevents the following 4 things:D - Damage from relevant sources is prevented
E - Equipping/enchanting by relevant sources is prevented
B - Blocking by relevant creatures is prevented
T - Targeting by relevant sources is prevented
Safe Passage does none of those things, so it will still prevent Ruric Thar from doing damage.
