Can I play a permanent card from my graveyard with x in the mana cost with Muldrotha's ability?

Asked by Falcondc 5 years ago

If I were to have Genesis Hydra in my graveyard, can I play it from my graveyard with Muldrotha, the Gravetide 's ability and then do the effect of Genesis Hydra to play permanents from the top of my library with converted mana cost x or less.

Genesis Hydra 's ability does not care about what zone it was in when you cast it. It will trigger when you cast it from the graveyard using Muldrotha.

As a note, you do not play the cards revealed by Genesis Hydra--you put the cards directly onto the battlefield. Play is a very specific term in Magic meaning to put it on the battlefield if it is a or cast it if it is a spell. That is a pretty important distinction--it means the permanents you reveal do not go onto the stack (and thus cannot be countered), and that they do not trigger any cast-based abilities.

So I can play a card from my graveyard with x in the mana cost with Muldrotha, the Gravetide 's ability?

Am I reading Genesis Hydra wrong or can I put more than one nonland permanent on the battlefield with it's ability. For example x=10, I can play a 10 cost card and a 9 cost card and an 8 cost card ... or do I play only 1 nonland permanent card of my choice out of the revealed x cards?

Short answer: yes, you can play permanent spells with X in the cost just fine.

Muldrotha, the Gravetide 's ability just lets you play cards from a zone other than your hand. It doesn't change the cost. Since you will still be paying the cost of Genesis Hydra as normal, that means you choose a value for X. It isn't automatically set to 0 as it would be if you were playing it without paying its mana cost.

With Genesis Hydra 's ability, you will put one single nonland permanent with CMC X or less on the battlefield.

muldrotha never says you can't, so i'm not sure where the confusion comes from.

Genesis Hydra specifically states "A" permanent. "A"=1.

Thank you all. I was confused cause when I played Muldrotha, I was told I couldn't cast an x cost spell with Muldrotha's ability. With regards to Genesis Hydra, I thought it was only 1 but the first answer confused me a bit cause it states "you put the cards directly onto the battlefield". Card with an s is more than one.
