Can I get Iona to trigger twice in the same game?

Asked by GorehoundABB 9 years ago

Hypothetical situation in a 4 player EDH game.

I Belbe's Portal Iona, Shield of Emeria into play. I declare a color.

My opponent(s) take out her out somehow after the ability resolves.

On my turn, one of the creatures dies and I sac Angelic Renewal to bring Iona back from the grave.

Would her enter the battlefield trigger allow me to declare another color? or would it just be a 1 time ETB effect off the original casting?

You may choose a different color. The game sees Iona, Shield of Emeria enter the battlefield the second time as a new object instead of the old one, and you can choose another color.

First, the ETB ability is a replacement effect, not a triggered ability. You make the choice as Iona, Shield of Emeria enters the battlefield.

Second, Iona, Shield of Emeria has what are called linked abilities. The last ability only works with the information from the second ability. When Iona, Shield of Emeria leaves the battlefield, it becomes a new instance of that object, so it won't remember what the "original" Iona, Shield of Emeria 's choice was. You'll choose any of the five colors, and only that particular color will be affected by the last ability. The choice doesn't need to be the same one you originally made.

It'll still only be one color.

When a card changes zones, it becomes an entirely new object with no memory of its previous existance in other zones (with some exceptions, like abilities that require last-known information or other specific information like Gift of Immortality ). Your 'new' Iona, Shield of Emeria has no relation to the 'old' one that was on the battlefield previously, and the 'old' color choice won't apply at all. You may of course choose the same color for the 'new' Iona.

It's worth noting that it's a static effect, like one from Stromkirk Captain . It only applies when it's on the battlefield, not for the rest of the game. As it's already been said, when Iona changes zones, she becomes a new object and has no relation to the old one. You may pick a colour like you did the first time it entered the battlefield, and the old colour won't apply at all.

Also I got the impression from your text that Iona died sometimes before and when something new died you sacrificed Angelic Renewal and brought Iona back instead? Angelic Renewal triggers when a creature dies and if you pay the cost (sacrifice Angelic Renewal ) then that creature is brought back to battlefield.
