Can I Combo Necropotence and Library of Leng?
Asked by marz1342 10 years ago
Pretty cut and dry, but I need to know if I can use Library of Leng to keep my discards from being exiled by Necropotence . Does it matter the order I play them? Do they even work synergetically?
@GreatSword -- HAHA! Awesome! I have an older necro, so it just says "Whenever you discard a card, remove that card from the game". Didn't know it happened AFTER hitting the graveyard. Awesome! Thanks for helping me out!

The real reason why this works is because of the replacement effect Library of Leng creates. A replacement effect changes an event in the game. The card you choose to put on top of your library never actually gets discarded. It doesn't have anything to do with Necropotence 's exiling effect being a triggered ability.

@GreatSword -- I get you, thanks for all the help! Phyrexia and I are in your debt!

@GreatSword FYI Library of Leng does still technically discard the cards. It just does not put them into your graveyard ever which is why it can get around the exile. When the Necropotence goes to find the card in the GY it will fail for obvious reasons.
10/4/2004 The ability replaces the normal discard action with a discard action that puts the card on the library instead of the graveyard.
This matters for cards that look for discarding like Megrim or Waste Not . However you never have to reveal the card so Waste Not would only ever give you the non-creature non-land ability aka Draw a Card. (assuming you use the Library of Leng and put the card on top of your Library)

Library of Leng creates a replacement effect when you discard a card. Instead of just discarding it into your graveyard, you may choose to put it on top of your library. Note that a card you choose not to put on your library is still discarded, so it will trigger Necropotence to exile the card.
