Can I activate mana abilities on creatures as soon as I play them?

Asked by Showstopper 11 years ago

Sorry if this question is obvious, I wasn't able to find a clear answer anywhere..

In terms of summoning sickness, say I play an aetherling, can I immediately activate one of its mana abilities right after I summon it, like to dodge a doom blade or something?

Summoning sickness says that a creature can't attack or use abilities with a tap (or untap) symbol in the cost unless you have controlled the creature continuously since the beginning of you upkeep. AEtherling does not have mana abilities (mana abilities are any ability that adds mana to your mana pool) but has activated abilities. Assuming you have the mana needed to activate them you can use them as soon as he comes into play.

Gyre Sage Elvish Mystic Llanowar Elves those are examples of mana abilities just so you have an idea, also good to note is that mana abilities don't use the stack, just some stuff you might need to know.
