Can a copied version of Fury's triggered ability target more than the given creature?

Asked by TheOfficialCreator 1 year ago

The interaction in question is between Agrus Kos, Eternal Soldier and Fury.

Namely, if I let Fury's ETB resolve and target Agrus Kos, then pay Agrus Kos's cost for his triggered ability, can I then divide Fury's new abilities among my opponent's creatures and my creatures that they are automatically assigned to?

I would assume that since Agrus Kos chooses the targets for the ability, this wouldn't be how it works, but I wanted to clarify since I'm not sure how the "divided as you choose" clause interacts with the predisposition.

No, you won't be able to split it up differently. Agrus' ability just does what it says and makes an as-is copy targeting each other creature you control.

Making a copy of a spell/ability copies all choices made while it was being cast/activated/triggered: modes, targets (including number of targets), divisions of an effect, the use of an alternative casting cost, etc. This is why most spell/ability-copying effects allow you to choose a different target for the copy, otherwise they wouldn't be very interesting. However, no effect currently exists that allows you to change any of the other decisions (and if they did exist they would probably cause some weird rules/interaction problems with certain cards).

Digging this up from the grave so I don't ask a similar and very related question. So Fury ETBs and targets Agrus Kos, Eternal Soldier, divvying up the damage with 1 to Agrus Kos and 3 to an opponent's creature, with Agrus being activated to repeat this for each of my creatures, where each will receive 1 damage and then I can distribute 3 damage to each of various other opponent's creatures for each of my creatures, correct? A similar example would be the -X of Huatli, Warrior Poet, doing the same 1 damage to Agrus, and the remaining to an opponent's creature, then repeated with Agrus' activation, likewise making each of those opponents' creatures unable to block if they were to survive. Correct? And say Huatli's -X = -9 with 1 damage to Agrus Kos, then 5 damage to an opponent's creature and 3 damage to another. When Agrus Kos repeats this for each of my creatures I will get to deal 5 and 3 damage to various creatures for each of mine, correct?

Trying to minimize clutter in the forums is appreciated, but it is best to just ask a new question. I'm not sure if Rhadamanthus has subscriptions enabled for all the posts they comment on. I just happened to see this pop up in the comment feed earlier or else no one was likely to see it and help you.

Agrus Kos, Eternal Soldier only allows you to copy the ability if they are the only target. This includes targets controlled by other players. You will never be able to copy any ability that targets Argus and an opponent's creature.

Laaame.... ha! But very much appreciated! That's not what I expected, but I apparently glanced over the "only target" portion. That removes a few options from my forming decklist. Again, much appreciated!

I'm assuming this single target limitation wouldn't apply to Ballroom Brawlers since it isn't targeting itself?

I was on vacation with limited/no internet, so no, I didn't see the notification. For anything older than a week or so, it's usually best to just make a new question topic versus add a follow-up comment, especially if only 1-2 people replied to the original.
