Bosh, Iron Golem as a EDH Commander- color identity?

Asked by linkofhyrule 13 years ago

I'm building an all-artifact(aside from lands :p ) EDH deck, and was a bit stumped on the mana sourcing. I've read a couple of Q&A's here on EDH colors, and saw that a colorless commander would require colorless/"one mana of any color" lands. As Bosh has a red mana activated ability, would i be ok to use mountains as well?

903.5c A card can be included in a Commander deck only if every color in its color identity is also found in the color identity of the decks commander.Example: Wort, the Raidmother is a legendary creature with mana cost 4R/GR/G. Worts color identity is red and green. Each card in a Wort Commander deck must be only red, only green, both red and green, or have no color. Each mana symbol in the mana cost or rules text of a card in this deck must be only red, only green, both red and green, or have no color.

903.5d A card with a basic land type may be included in a Commander deck only if each color of mana it could produce is included in the commanders color identity.Example: Wort, the Raidmothers color identity is red and green. A Wort Commander deck may include land cards with the basic land types Mountain and/or Forest. It cant include any land cards with the basic land types Plains, Island, or Swamp.

so to answer your question, i believe the answer is no. its the commanders mana cost, not his activated abilities...

hope that helped

Yes you can. The commander's color identity is determined by the mana symbols in its mana cost, as well as its rules text. for all intents and purposes in commander, Bosh has a color identity of Red.

903.4. The Commander variant uses color identity to determine what cards can be in a deck with a certain commander. The color identity of a card is the color or colors of any mana symbols in that cards mana cost or rules text, plus any colors defined by its characteristic-defining abilities (see rule 604.3) or color indicator (see rule 204).Example: Bosh, Iron Golem is a legendary artifact creature with mana cost 8 and the ability 3R, Sacrifice an artifact: Bosh, Iron Golem deals damage equal to the sacrificed artifact's converted mana cost to target creature or player. Boshs color identity is red.

Thanks for the fast answers, both. If it were the CMC only, I'd be in real trouble.. I've only played a short while, and I can count the number of different colorless lands I own on one hand.

For many years, the Commander deck construction rules did only look at the Commander's mana cost, so Bosh, Iron GolemMTG Card: Bosh, Iron Golem wasn't even allowed to be a Commander at all, because his text box made him violate the rules. Because of Bosh, MemnarchMTG Card: Memnarch, Thelon of HavenwoodMTG Card: Thelon of Havenwood, and Rhys the ExiledMTG Card: Rhys the Exiled (I don't think anyone seriously wanted to play with Daughter of AutumnMTG Card: Daughter of Autumn), the concept of Color Identity was introduced in the Commander December 2010 Rules Update.

I know the question has already been answered, I just thought you all might find that interesting to know.
