Board Swipes & Hexproof
Asked by my_gizmo 12 years ago
If an opponent uses a board wipe like Terminus or Supreme Verdict , can I use Sheltering Word or card:Ranger's Guile to protect at least one of my creatures?
You can use the effects; but it won't have the desired result. Terminus and Supreme verdict don't target. If your a creature on the field; you just get effected by them.
Kinda like being in close proximity to a land mine. It's not targeting you; you just happen to be near enough to the blast to suffer from it.

A spell or ability only has targets if it specifically uses the word "target" somewhere in its text (for certain keyword abilities - Equip, Enchant, etc. - this may be in the rules text instead of on the card). Effects like Terminus and Supreme Verdict don't target, so abilities like Hexproof, Shroud, and Protection don't offer any defense against them.

This is completely irrelevant, but this is the first time I've seen multiple semicolons used by someone who clearly doesn't understand English grammar.

However, it's important to note that protection from red would work for something like overloaded Electrickery , because the source itself is still red.

What if it says destroy each nonland permanent, it has an overload cost, that replaces target with each.

@Masterofall123: As was stated several times, a spell or ability that doesn't say "target" (overload replaces all instances of "target" with "each," as you said) is not affected by hexproof.

Those spells don't target, so hexproof doesn't help. Something like Rootborn Defenses can protect against Supreme Verdict though.
