Birthing Pod Vs. Into the Roil or Divine Offering

Asked by Minathia 13 years ago

An opponent has a Birthing Pod and a creature out. When he activates the ability and I in response use some form of removal like Into the Roil or Divine Offering , does the ability still resolve and get gets to search for a new creature?

On a larger scale, my question is; when an activated ablility goes on the stack, is it depentent on the source of the ability (in this case Birthing Pod ) to be in good standing upon resolution of the ability, or is the ability a seperate entity on the stack?

Thanks bros!

Also, a ruling listing would be awesome. Can't get to them at work! :(

Because sacraficing the creature is part of the cost of birthing pods effect, the new creature would still come out.

Once an ability is on the stack it is considered separated from the source and the condition of the source doesn't usually matter.

However, if the effect would target the source and the target (the source) is no longer a valid target, the effect is countered as a state based action. ie: Glintwing Invoker 's ability goes on the stack, and in response it gets destroyed with Doom Blade the invoker's ability would not resolve.

He can still use his Birthing Pod 's ability even if you bounce it in response. Abilities exist independently of their sources, with only rare exceptions. In this case, even after they activate the Pod it's too late for you to stop it with an Into the Roil because the ability is already on the stack.

For an example of an ability that does care whether the source is on the battlefield, here is one: Auratouched Mage . This ability behaves differently if the Auratouched Mage is no longer in play when it resolves, and this is the kind of wording used on other abilities that check the status of their originator as well.

*112.7a. Once activated or triggered, an ability exists on the stack independently of its source. Destruction or removal of the source after that time won't affect the ability. Note that some abilities cause a source to do something (for example, "Prodigal Sorcerer deals 1 damage to target creature or player") rather than the ability doing anything directly. In these cases, any activated or triggered ability that references information about the source because the effect needs to be divided checks that information when the ability is put onto the stack. Otherwise, it will check that information when it resolves. In both instances, if the source is no longer in the zone it's expected to be in at that time, its last known information is used. The source can still perform the action even though it no longer exists.

you also can not remove the creature he is sacking in responce because sacking is part of the cost, by the time he taps the mana and sacks the creature its already to late
