Autumn's Veil response to Counterspell?

Asked by rorofat 8 years ago

I was looking at Autumn's Veil, and I realized something:

Say I cast Runeclaw Bear and my opponent Counterspells it. In response, can I cast Autumn's Veil to void his Counterspell? Or would I of had top cast the veil before the creature?

Second example: Can I cast Autumn's Veil in response to something like Abrupt Decay to void it, similar to Faith's Shield?

Thanks!

Yes, that's the whole purpose of Autumn's Veil

  • Take note that when countering, the counter spell still has a legal target, so it will still resolve, It just won't actually counter your spell. This matters for counters like Rewind and Cryptic Command which do more than just counter.

  • with targeting, however the spell will fizzle, since it has no legal targets, so Abrupt Decay won't actually resolve.

Yes in both cases.

Autumn's Veil creates an effect that prevents blue or black spells from countering your spells. This effect lasts until the end of the turn.

Any blue or black spell that would counter a spell you control this turn after Autumn's Veil resolves instead doesn't counter that spell. So the Counterspell will still resolve, but it won't do anything.

In the second case, Abrupt Decay would be countered by the game rules (note that this gets around its "can't be countered by spells or abilities" clause) because its target is illegal.
