Assault formation and Rabid bite

Asked by arejay 9 years ago

I'm curious if I use assault formation on a defender type creature such as an unflipped thing in the ice. Since assault formation deals combat damage equal to the toughness rather than the power... I cast rabid bite. Does rabid bite deal damage based on my creatures toughness or its actual power?

Assault formation lets you assign combat damage based off toughness rather than power.

Rabid Bite causes one of your creatures to deal damage to a creature you don't control, and the damage is equal to your creature's power. This is not combat damage, and will not be modified by assault formation. Thing in the Ice would deal 0 damage with Rabid Bite.

Note that the only time damage is combat damage is when it is assigned and dealt as a turn based action, in the combat damage step. Otherwise it is noncombat damage.

Linking cards helps readability a lot; not everyone is necessarily familiar with the specific cards.

Note that defender is a specific thing, and defenders don't necessarily have zero power, such as Basilica Guards. I do understand what you meant, I just wanted to make sure this was apparent.

"Combat damage" is specifically the damage dealt by creatures as a turn-based-action in the damage step of the Combat phase. This is the only kind of damage that Assault Formation interacts with. A spell such as Rabid Bite will still deal damage based on the creature's power.
